Edward Fenner, MA
SHORT BIOGRAPHY
Edward Fenner has written, edited, and advised professionally full-time since 1985. Educated in computer maintenance technology, broadcasting, and journalism, as well as corporate, marketing, and technical communications, Edward has put his extensive training and work experiences to use with some of the top institutions, corporations, and government agencies in Canada, the United States, and abroad.

He was a mature student and graduated in June 2010 with a BA (Honours, summa cum laude) in professional writing and was awarded the President's Medal (Murray G. Ross Award) - York's highest honour given to a graduating undergraduate. He completed his Master of Arts part-time in York University's unique Science and Technology Studies program in 2014 where his research focused on the private papers of pioneering American nuclear physicist Robert Jemison Van de Graaff (1901-1967).
Edward is also a volunteer and is the founder, past president, and past media director for the York University Mature Students Organization (YUMSO, still going strong) and also for a national mature student network called CAMSO (closed in 2016).
He currently volunteers with the York Pioneer & Historical Society.
Edward's love of literature was demonstrated by his volunteer work mentoring more than 200 students at York University's Existere - Journal of Arts and Literature from 2007-2018 and as the past publicist at the Words Alive Literary Festival.
From 2008-2023, he worked in publishing and communications at York University and was a longtime member of the University's Strategic Communications Council and Brand Stewardship Council. In 2008, Edward was named a Fellow of Vanier College. He is also the former managing editor of
e-MAGINED, the Canadian e-Magazine of International Education.
In May 2014, Edward became an adjunct faculty member at Seneca College of Applied Arts and Technology (Newnham Campus) now known as Seneca Polytechnic, where he teaches courses on technical writing as well as courses on business writing and professional communications).

In September 2017, Edward also became an adjunct faculty member at George Brown College of Applied Arts and Technology (St James Campus) where he teaches courses on advanced technical communications, writing web content, editing web content, copyediting, accessible documentation, and various forms of business communications.

Edward continues to teach at Seneca and George Brown.

For example, on contract with General Motors of Canada, Edward was one of Canada’s senior publications editors in the defence industry. He managed the editorial production of some of Canada’s largest technical publishing contracts with the armed forces departments of Canada, the United States, and others.

On other contracts, Edward has served as a writer, editor, publisher, analyst, strategist, trainer, consultant, or communications advisor to York University, IBM Canada, Cybermation, Dofasco, Dyadem, Found Aircraft Canada, and has consulted on or created marketing products for Medieval Times Dinner & Tournament, NASCAR, 7-Eleven, Canadian Blood Services, the Ontario Nurses Association, Humber College, and many more clients.
Edward is well respected for his dedication to customer satisfaction and his outstanding reputation for producing top-quality communications materials, services, and messaging; training and educational products, instructional scripts, and video/audio production. Edward believes in continuous improvement and enhanced his skills at York University in Toronto by returning to academic studies as a mature student in 2004.

Edward Fenner was a leading mature student and graduated in June 2010 with a BA (Honours, summa cum laude) in professional writing and was awarded the President's Medal (Murray G. Ross Award) - York's highest honour given to a graduating undergraduate. In Fall of 2014 he graduated from part-time studies at York University's Science and Technology Studies' Master's degree program. He presented portions of his major research paper at conferences at Cornell University, York University, and Brock University; and at The National Academies in Washington, DC.
He is also a volunteer and is the founder, past president, and past media manager for the York University Mature Students' Organization (YUMSO, still going strong) and also for a national mature student network called CAMSO (closed in 2016).

Edward has an extensive background and expertise in: publishing, editing, and professional writing; strategic advising; technical, corporate, and media communications; corporate training and education, lesson and course development, and adult learning issues; and automotive weapons systems such as LAVs (Light Armored Vehicles, wheeled, produced by GM/General Dynamics). He is also the former managing editor of e-MAGINED, the Canadian e-Magazine of International Education.
Edward Fenner's academic research interests are particle accelerator history; electronic learning technologies for adults, electronic publishing history (from desktop publishing to print-on-demand); publishing via mobile/remote devices (smart phones, laptops, news displays, etc.); electrical inventors of the 19th and early 20th centuries (esp. Bell, Fessenden, Tesla, & Van de Graaff) and their impact on science and technology; retro technologies redeveloped for the 21st century (e.g. pneumatic tube transports (PTTs), steam heating, HVDC); and steampunk culture, design, and literature.

In 2008, Edward was named a Fellow of Vanier College. He currently works in publishing and communications at York University and was a longtime member of the University's Strategic Communications Council and Brand Stewardship Council.
